All activities which take place in the class go from lesson plan so that a teacher needs to design lesson plan well. Especially for the pre-service English teachers who have less experience in teaching, designing lesson plan is quite significant to do. Because they will be the in-service ones and teach the real students at the real schools, knowing the ability of the pre-service English teachers in designing lesson plan is important. Based on the explanation above, the pre-service English teachers ability in designing lesson plan is analyzed. The research problem of this study is focused on: To what extent is the pre-service English teachers ability in designing lesson plan? Then, it is divided into three sub-research questions: (1) How is the quality of the lesson plan designed by the pre-service English teachers? (2) What are the strengths and the weaknesses of the lesson plan designed by the pre-service Englsih teachers? (3) What are the causes of those strenghts and weaknesses? Qualitative descriptive design is used in this study. Documentation and interview were done to collect the data to answer those research questions. The subject of this research is the English Education Department students taking the internship program (PPL2) year 2012, State Institute of Islamic Studies Sunan Ampel Surabaya. 17 pre-service English teachers with their lesson plans were chosen through purposive sampling. The result of the study shows that the pre-service English teachers ability in designing lesson plan is quite good. The majority of them can formulate the instructional objectives well, select and organize the materials systematically, select the learning source and teaching media, explain the sequence of learning activities, and determine the assessment techniques. However, there are some matters which need to be considered, such as including class description, timetable fit, anticipated problems and solutions in the lesson plans. They are stuck in the format of the lesson plan applied at schools.} }
