abstract={In the last few years, a lot of research on composites has focused on
natural fiber composites as an alternative to replacing fibers that are difficult to
manufacture or even find. With the increasing effort in the use of composites, the
need for composite manufacturing has also increased where the application of
better methods such as the use of the vacuum bagging method can be a solution to
overcome problems that exist in conventional fabrication techniques such as the
hand lay-up method.
The bending test and SEM test will be applied to bamboo fiber reinforced
composites with a composition consisting of 40% fiber volume fraction, 59% resin
volume fraction and 1% catalyst volume fraction. The specimens were fabricated
through the hand lay-up method and the vacuum bagging method (with variations
in the pressure to be used in the vacuum pump are 15 inHg, 20 inHg and 25 inHg)
which were then formed according to the provisions in ASTM D7264-15.
Based on the test results obtained, it can be seen that the fabrication
method can affect the bending stress value where the composite fabricated
through the vacuum bagging method with a pressure variation of 25 inHg has the
highest average bending stress value of 26,50 MPa. In addition, the vacuum
bagging method can also be said to be still not fully effective because the vacuum
is unable to remove gases and voids that have been attached to the laminate due
to the curing process that has started before the vacuum process. However, some
of the gases and voids on the surface can be removed by vacuum so that they have
better mechanical properties than the hand lay-up method.}
