In English, there are four skills that must be mastered. Among those, reading is the most important because it becomes a major priority in education. By means of reading skill, it can enhance the studentÂ’s ability to understand the reading concept easily, and it can develop critical thinking skills on students. The strategies in teaching reading used by English teacher are one of the important things to achieve the goal of teaching learning activity. To handle the current problems, the English teacher should have precise strategies to teach reading proficiency for the students so that teaching learning process more effectively and purposefully. In this research, the researcher intends to investigate (1) the kinds of strategies used by English teacher in teaching reading at SMA Negeri 9 Malang and (2) the implementation of strategies applied by English teacher in teaching reading at SMA Negeri 9 Malang. This research typically adopted a qualitative research design since the data were in the form of words, not in the form of numerical data like in the experimental research design. Furthermore, the data were derived from classroom observation and interview. In this research, there were three instruments that were used, namely: field notes, observation checklist and interview guide. The result of this research shows that the strategies used by English teacher and also the implementation of strategies applied in teaching reading were: Preview, Question, Read, and Review. For the Preview strategy, the teacher asked the students to look at the first paragraph or the heading. In the Question strategy the teacher tried to find the unfamiliar vocabulary and wrote on the whiteboard from the text that students were reading likewise asked the students to read the question first before read the whole text. While Read strategy the students read the whole text and tried to identify the unfamiliar vocabulary and also answer the question previously. Therefore, Review strategy the students back to read again the answer to verify the question to make sure that they understood the text. These strategies were used under deep consideration of what really happen in the classroom activity. What studentsÂ’ need is an intensive handling of the teacher to overcome the studentÂ’s problem about reading skill.} }
