		abstract={This study aims to determine the meaning of communicative events in the stages of the ritual process of Ngaji Makam Ngaturang Ulak Kaya.
This study uses qualitative research with ethnographic research methods of communication. The subjects in this study were penghulu, kiai santri, and ritual participants involved in the ritual communicative event. Data collection techniques used were passive participant observation and in-depth interviews.
The results of this study are that communication activities in rituals include two communicative situations, namely mengosap and mandi di bawah gading in Masjid Kuno, menyilak and priapan in the house of penghulu. Communicative events that occur during rituals reflect two meanings, namely the spiritual meaning and meaning of social structures. Spiritual meaning in the form of spiritual elements that people believe in starting from God as the highest element, ancestral spirit as a liaison between society and God, then penghulu and kiai as representatives in the real world. The meaning of social structure in the form of grouping community members vertically starting from penghulu, kiai, and the community is characterized by their procedures in performing speech acts. Communicative actions are generally in the form of prayers, requests, orders, and statements verbally, and non-verbal actions in the form of silence, shaking hands, and low tone of voice.}
