The formulation of the problem is in the form of how the formation of metaphorical idioms, as well as the function, and meaning of metaphorical idioms contained in the novel. Data collection methods and techniques are in the form of listening methods using basic techniques in the form of tapping techniques and advanced techniques in the form of note-taking techniques. The data analysis methods and techniques used are the matching method and the agih method. The matching method with the basic technique is a referential determining element sorting technique (PUP). The agih method uses basic techniques in the form of direct element techniques (BUL) and advanced techniques in the form of insertion techniques, reverse techniques and extension techniques. Data presentation methods are presented formally and informally. Based on the analysis that has been done, it is found that there are 30 metaphorical idioms in the novel Rumah di Atas Ombak by Arini Hidajati. The metaphorical idioms include, the patter of tears, silent brackets, the passage of time, and a series of sorrows. The formation of metaphorical idioms consists of the structure and its constituent elements. There are eight forming structures, namely KK+KB, KB+KB, KB+KS, KK+KS, KB+KBil, KS+KS, KS+KB, KB+KK; and six constituent elements, namely sense words, word classes, natural objects, numerals, body parts, and plant parts. The meanings of the metaphorical idioms used in the novel include; the sound of crying means 'not broken in living every problem that exists', silent brackets means 'always trapped in silence and loneliness', time travel means 'the process of life from time to time', and a series of sorrows means 'pain and suffering that arise one by one in succession in life'. In addition, there are three functions of metaphorical idioms that were found, namely functioning as a means of communication for the author in describing coastal communities, a means of depicting the culture of religious coastal communities, and depicting women's emancipation which the author wants to convey through the idioms used.
