This study attempts to analyze kinds of figurative languages found in
Coldplay?s Album ?A Head Full of Dreams? as a resource for teaching poetry.
This study analyzes figurative languages found in song lyrics of five song in the
latest Coldplay?s album ?A Head Full of Dreams?. The songs are Hymn for the
Weekend, Everglow, Amazing Day, Adventure of a Lifetime and Up&Up.
Teaching poetry considered one of literature and language teaching. In teaching
poetry, students tend to get bored and have difficulty in understanding figurative
meanings in the poetry. Using song lyric is one of the alternative ways to teach
figurative meanings in poetry that students may enjoy. This study conducted to
find whether or not song lyrics can be used in teaching poetry particularly in
understanding figurative language. The study used qualitative approach. The
object was song lyrics from Katy Perry? Prism album. There are 10 kinds and 180
expressions of figurative language which are found in song lyric of Coldplay?s
album ?A Head Full of Dreams?. From the research findings, it can be concluded
that since expression of figurative languages were found in the ?A Head Full of
Dreams? album, students can beneficial in learning poetry through the album.
Thus, teacher can use song lyrics in teaching poetry. On the other hand, students
can also improve their understanding in figurative meaning by learning poetry
through song lyrics.
