		abstract={Politeness is one way a person interacts with others by paying attention to
politeness strategies to consider the faces of those who interact. The purpose of
this research is to describe about negative politeness strategies based on theory
Brown and Levinson (1987).The method used in this study is qualitative
method.A qualitative reaearch is a research strategy that indicates the relationship
between theory and research a usually emphasizes on how theories were generated
by using word not numeric Sudaryanto (1993), Miles and Huberman (1994).Data
in this study were taken from the movie series of The Lord of The Rings in terms
of utterances that express the negative politeness strategies. From the data analysis
the writer found six strategies of negative politeness. They are : (1) question
hedge, (2) give deference, (3) apologize, (4) impersonalize. (5) state the FTA as a
general rule,and (6) go on record. Besides that the writer also finds the markers
used to show the negative politeness strategies that function to maximize the
negative politeness strategies of to avoid Face Threatening Acts, such as;
please,sir,mr,mrs,young sir,my lord, my king. From this study, the negative
politeness strategies mostly used by the actors for giving deference strategy,
apologizing strategy, and go on record strategy with different markers which
maximize the negative politeness strategies.
