		abstract={The purpose of the research was to know the difficulties faced by English 
students to improve their English vocabulary mastery at SMPN 2 Lingga Utara. This research was a qualitative research while the instrument was a questionnaire. The participants of the research consisted of 33 students from the 7th grade in the academic year of 2021/2022. The participants were chosen by purpose sampling from 103 students at the school. The researcher adapted Bogdan and Biklen?s technique to analyse the data and to find the difficulties. The result showed that most of the students had difficulties to improve their English vocabulary mastery because the words were not familiar for them. Therefore, the researcher expected the English teachers and students to create English environmental situation.}
