Abstract :
One way to overcome corrosion in underground gas pipelines at PT. PGN is a magnesium anode sacrificial cathodic protection system. The working principle of a sacrificial anodic cathodic protection system is that a different reaction occurs when the two metals are connected to one another. Based on voltaic series where the potential of magnesium is greater than iron, magnesium will oxidize and act as an anode, while iron undergoes a reduction reaction and acts as a cathode. Over time the sacrificial anode content will be exhausted and the protection value will also decrease below the standard, therefore correvtive maintenance is needed in the form of anode replacement. After replacing and measuring it turns out the potential value of protection in 2019 is much lower than in 2015, which is equal to -1071mV in 2019 and -1358mV in 2015. In addition, the age of the anode is also not in accordance with the calculation of sacrificial anodic cathodic protection system which states that anode age of up to 4.31 years, but the reality in the anode age field is not in accordance with the calculation because the protection potential value is below the standard, which is equal to -780mV. From these problems can be analyzed, it turns out the cause is the lower soil resistivity value so that the soil is more corrosive and causes the anode to be more burdened because the anode current released to protect the gas pipe becomes larger
