Abstract :
Electrical energy is an substancial factor for supporting life a activities of a community. It is important for electric power to be transferred safely and continuously throughout the community. Along the process of distributing electric power, lightning may cause a disruption to the system. Therefore Lightning Arrester
was used as a security measure against power surge caused by lightning, although it won't worked all the time. It is possible that in a Lightning Arrester occur many malfunctions.
Because of the problem it may cause, this research analyze the possibility of Arrester failure and life time of the medium voltage 20 kV arrester, mainly in Tangerang city with consideration of the metal oxide arrester. Data of lightning
disturbance that was used is based on lightning characteristics in Tangerang. In this paper, the number of probability for an Arrester to fail is 0,1582202. Using the average density of lightning strike taken from year 2016 until 2020 in Tangerang
with distance between each Arrester is 135 m for Banten PLN network, we are able to obtain the life time of medium voltage Arrester of 20 kv is 39 years 1 months 17 days. This situasion can occur because the Tangerang City has a small density of
lightning strike.
