Abstract :
At present, most small-scale power plants use fossil-fueled diesel generator sets. The high exploitation of fossil energy has a negative impact on the environment. This encourages the use of alternative energy sources, namely biodiesel derived from palm oil. However, palm oil has a viscosity (thickness) that is different from diesel so that it cannot be directly used as diesel engine fuel. Therefore we need an additional equipment in the diesel engine in the form of a heating system. This research will discuss the effect of heating temperature of palm oil to reduce viscosity. Then the viscosity measurement will be done using the ostwald viscometer. The heating system can heat the water to boiling in 66 minutes until it reaches 97.8oC and palm oil with temperatures reaching 87.9oC to 91.3oC. This measurement obtained a mixture of 50% oil + 50% diesel to 10% oil and 90% diesel viscosity measured values ranging from 4,826 Ns / m2 to 2,671 Ns / m2.
