Abstract :
Paving blocks are a construction material commonly used as a ground cover. The high population growth has made the need for pavement material increasing so that the production of paving blocks has also increased. For this reason, many innovations have been made to support these needs. One of them is by researching the use of substitute materials for paving blocks. One of the substitution materials that can be used is fly ash and oil palm boiler ash. This study aims to determine the effect of using fly ash as a substitute for cement and oil palm boiler ash as a sand substitution material on the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks. This test is expected to help find other alternative materials as the building blocks of paving blocks. The test is carried out based on SNI 03- 0691-1996 regarding Paving Block including compressive strength and water absorption tests. The research was conducted by making 6 variations of paving block mixtures, namely normal mixtures, 10% fly ash + 5% oil palm boiler ash, 10% fly ash + 10% oil palm boiler ash, 10% fly ash + 15% oil palm boiler ash, 10 % fly ash + 20% oil palm boiler ash, and 10% fly ash + 25% oil palm boiler ash. Based on the test results at the age of 28 days, the compressive strength results were 12.64 MPa, 11.27 MPa, 9.72 MPa, 9.14 MPa, 7.79 MPa, and 7.73 MPa respectively. Meanwhile, the water absorption rate for each variation was 7.36%, 7.69%, 9.94%, 9.11%, 9.26% and 12.65%. The test results on normal variations, obtained the largest compressive strength value, namely 12.64 MPa and the lowest water absorption rate of 7.36%. For paving blocks with 10% fly ash + 5% oil palm boiler ash, the optimum compressive strength is 11.27 MPa and water absorption rate is 7.69%, achieving paving blocks with quality class C
