Abstract :
One of the central power plants in the labor system is hydropower, which is a power plant by utilizing water resources as its working fluid. In operating PLTA requires high reliability so that the energy production capacity to the load center or to the electrical power system network can be more optimum. One of the components in the hydropower plant is penstock. Closed pipe lines, both laminar and turbulent, must experience head losses. Head losses in penstock are a phenomenon of losses on the penstock, thus reducing the head value of the hydropower. In penstock units 1 and 2 of SAGULING PLTA there are two head losses phenomena, namely: major head losses due to friction of penstock to water and minor head losses in the form of turns 500 with radius from axis 589.65 m and so on 9 turns from the penstock axis. Changes in temperature and discharge affect the size of head losses, but for temperature does not significantly affect penstock efficiency. At a temperature of 27.40C and a flow rate of 7.71m / s, the total head losses obtained were 14,984 m, making the potential for total penstock power to be 359,544 MW with an efficiency of 95,636%. Always clean and maintain filters on the intake to reduce the possibility of entering foreign objects into the penstock which will damage the surface in the penstock and reduce penstock efficiency.
