Abstract :
Insulation is a material that cannot conduct electric current, it is usually used to separate live parts from one another or from voltage parts in an electrical energy distribution system. Insulation media commonly used consist of three types, namely liquid insulation, solid insulation and air or gas insulation. Air is an insulating material that is widely used because it is classified as an insulating material that is cheap and easy to find. But in fact the content in the air does not only consist of neutral molecules, but there are still free electrons scattered in the air, causing the air to still be able to conduct currents which is called insulation failure. The occurrence of insulation failure can be influenced by several factors such as weather conditions, humidity levels, air temperature, atmospheric pressure, the shape and unevenness of the conductor surface, the applied voltage and the distance between the electrodes. In this study, air insulation resistance was tested with the influence of variations in ambient temperature and humidity to determine the difference in breakdown voltage that occurred. The temperature at the time of testing was set at 22oC, 26oC, 30oC, 34oC and 38oC with varying humidity levels. Based on the results of research that has been carried out, it is found that humidity and temperature greatly affect the value of the breakdown voltage that occurs where the lower the humidity level, the higher the breakdown voltage value, but the higher the temperature will increase the electron velocity so that breakdown voltage occurs faster.
