Abstract :
Insulation failure is a problem that often occurs in the distribution of electrical energy. Insulation is needed to separate two or more electrical conductors that there is no electric jump. This study aims to determine the effect of increasing temperature on characteristics of the breakdown voltage of the air insulation and the dielectric strength of the air in the test. The test method carried out to achieve the research objective to adjust the temperature of the test room at 28?C, 33?C, 38?C, 43?C and 48?C. with ball electrodes, needle electrodes and plate electrodes with variable air gaps. Set 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm. Based on the results of the study, was obtained that the breakdown voltage of the air insulation when there was an increase in the room temperature resulted in the breakdown voltage value decreasing and when the shape the electrode used became more pointed, the breakdown voltage value of the air insulation will be faster so that the breakdown voltage will decrease. For the size of the dielectric strength of the air, it is influenced by the distance between the air, where when the gap given is greater, the value of the dielectric strength will decrease.
