Abstract :
Generator or also called alternator is the main tool in the power generation system because it functions to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. In the process of generating electrical energy, changes in load often cause the generator voltage to change so that there is a process to stabilize it called the excitation system. The excitation system is a process of providing reinforcement in the form of direct current which is flowed into the field coil contained in the rotor in the generator. The research method used is quantitative by using data analysis and utilizing existing theory as supporting material. The Singkarak hydropower plant uses a static type excitation system with a charcoal brush (Brush). Due to the ever-changing loading, the resulting voltage must be kept stable, where to stabilize the output voltage reactive power is needed. To generate reactive power, the excitation current is regulated. When the load increases, the voltage generated by the generator decreases, to overcome the decrease in voltage, the excitation current is increased, when the excitation current increases, the reactive power also increases and vice versa. Capability curve is a curve that describes the working area limit of a 3-phase synchronous generator. The operating area limits for the synchronous generator unit 1 PLTA Singkarak on the capability curve are the rotor current limit, the stator current limit, the stator core heating limit. To find out the performance condition of the generator, you can use Matrix Laboratory (Matlab) software by inputting operational data for the Singkarak hydropower plant on 01, 02, 06 and 13 February 2021. The loading that occurred on that date was still operating within the safe limit of the Singkarak hydropower generator capability curve.
