Abstract :
Jayapura City is a tropical that has a fairly high level of lightning vulnerability, due to being supported by demographic conditions making the occurrence of lightning strikes in Jayapura city into the category of cities that have a fairly high level of lightning vulnerability. considering that one of the causes of disturbances that often occur in high-voltage systems comes from lightning. So the need for an optimal distance between the lightning arrester and the transformer in order to minimize the level of interference due to lightning surges. Lightning arrester is one of the protective devices that serves to protect equipment from surge circuits and lightning surges. From the results that have been obtained that, with a distance of 4.11 meters and 4.40 meters, the impulse voltage values due to surges arriving at the transformer at the Skyline Substation are 114.22 kV and 114.80 kV. The optimal distance from the placement of a lightning arrester with a transformer is at a distance of 0.58 meters because this distance produces a large impulse voltage value due to a surge that arrives at the transformer of 107.16 kV. The value of the impulse voltage due to the surge is smaller than the value of the impulse voltage due to the surge obtained from the lightning arrester separated from the transformer. Therefore it can be said that the placement of a good lightning arrester must be as close as possible to the equipment it protects.
