Abstract :
ABSTRACT Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest reserves of laterite ore in the world, however the laterite ore has not been considered as the main raw material in the national steel industry, whereas the content of Fe or Ni in laterite seeds is high. This study aims to determine the mechanical properties and effects of cooling media on microstructure, one of them by means of austemper carburization heat treatment process and variations in cooling media, namely with a fan for 1 hour, dipped in water media and left in the furnace for 1 day. The heat treatment carried out includes the temperature of austenite 950o C with a holding time of 1 hour, then at austemper temperature of 400o C with a holding time of 1 hour. Hardness testing using Rockwell Hardnees method, strength testing carried out impact test using Charpy method, microstructure testing using olympus PME brand optical microscope tool, and fracture surface testing using Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispensing x-ray (SEM-EDX). The results of the research on Cr-Mo alloy laterite steel showed that the hardness value increased with the highest hardness value in the 5k sample with a variation of cooling media with a 1 hour fan of 65.48 HRC and the microstructure showed a 5k phase of ferrite, pearlite and martensite which makes the sample harder. And the strength results show the highest absorbed energy value in the 4T sample with a variation of cooling media left in the furnace of 20 Joules and which is indicated by there is dimple form the results of the fracture surface with the results of the SEM sample.
