Abstract :
AISI 8740 steel is a steel that is classified as weathering steel, that steel is very important role in industry needs As for increasing the resistance to corrosion, it is done by increasing the addition of Cr element and some variations such as : C, Si, Mn, P, Ni, Mo. The objective is to determine the effect of changes of Cr element on AISI 8740 Steel in the form of mechanical properties. In this research to determine the change characteristic of AISI 8740 Steel hence done some heat treatment process, the initial process is to cut sample with size 10mm×10mm as much as 16 sample. After that done heat treatment process for 1 hour, continued with full process at temperature 9000C, holding time 1 hour and cooling. Cooling media in this research are air. After that re-process tempering with temperature (1000C, 2000C, and 3000C) with holding time 30 minutes. And after that done rockwell testing, metallography, corrosion. The goal is to determine the mechanical structure changes of AISI 8740 Steel. the test results are obtained for optimal conditions of chrome value of 3.07. while for the microstructure due to the increase in hardness value, the grain size obtained becomes smoother, while for corrosion resistance there is an increase in the rise and fall of the corrosion rate due to variations in chrome elements.
