Abstract :
Steam power plant (PLTU) is a generator that relies on the kinetic energi of steam to generate electrical energi. One of the fuels used in Indonesia is coal. In Indonesia there are various types of coal that is high calorie coal, medium calorie, and low calorie. In 2016 coal production in Indonesia reached 419 million tons with details of 333 million tons in exports, while 86 million tons for domestic consumption. PLTU in Indonesia mostly operates using low calorie coal (low rank). From the results of research conducted at PLTU PT.Lestari Banten Energi in January 2018 - March 2018 using low calorie coal (low rank) showed that the quality of coal is very influential on the cost of generation where the lower the quality of coal then the flow rate of coal higher so the value specific fuel consumption will rise. The higher the flow rate of coal then the cost required more and more. But this can be overcome by the new technology that is supercritical boiler that can reduce the flow rate of coal because of its more perfect combustion where in terms of thermal efficiency can reach 38.5% - 41.5%. And the cost required to generate 1 KWh electric energi ranges from Rp.400 - Rp.460. so it can be concluded that low calorie coal (low rank) appropriately used by PT.Lestari Banten Energi.
