Abstract :
Insulation coordination is expressed as the method to avoid the damage of electrical equipment that is caused by over voltages. Over voltages are caused by internal factor such as switching surge and external factor such as lightning surge. Over voltages which its value higher than Basic Insulation Level (BIL) of equipment will caused damage for those equipment. The main equipment that must be protected in insulation coordination problem for substation is transformer. Arrester is the main protection device in insulation coordination for substation. The problem of Insulation coordination at Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) for Extra High Voltage 500 kV in Kembangan will be studied in this research. The main purpose from this research is to know protection level of arrester toward the transformer with volt-time curve. Volt-time curve describes insulation endurance of transformer and arrester protection level toward over voltages. In this research, is known that the value of over voltages which go into the transformer is higher than the insulation level of transformer, voltage value for lightning surge is 2776 kV and voltage value for switching surge is 1633 kV. However, the endurance of transformer insulation for lightning surge is 1550 kV and for switching surge is 1300 kV. Seen from arrester characteristic at volt-time curve, arrester that is applied at GIS Kembangan has been enough to protect the transformer from over voltages those come from lightning surge or switching surge.
