Abstract :
Energy in vast amount is transmitted by transmission line from power plant to substation. In Indonesia overhead transmission is considered to be more effective in transmitting electrical energy, especially on high-voltage. Because of that high-voltage transmission going passing through an open field, more over on highlands, has a high chance of getting struck by a high voltage surge. Lightning transmission line will cause over-voltage flowing to the substation and has to be channeled to the ground through Lightning Arrester. Lightning Arrester is very essential in protecting equipment from excessive voltage, the costliest equipment on the substation is the transformer. transformer must have specialized protection by installing Lightning Arrester on its anterior. The result obtained from the research by using simple equation method is that impulse voltage coming to the transformer's terminal is 513,3 kV if the distance occur is 4m. It is far smaller than the transformer base level isolation used which is 650 kV. Maximum arrester distance amounts to 45 meters corresponding with protection standards, so the power transformer protection against lightning surge fault is exceptional.
