Millennials and rural community are known to have oppositecharacteristics regarded with the use of technology, openness to diversity, andlanguage variation maintenance. This study is aimed to identify Englishpronunciation on friction consonants made by Millennials in rural community andinvestigate factors contributing to their pronunciation. This was a qualitative study with four native Javaneseparticipants. The data were collected through pronunciation test and interview. The results of the tests showed that participants succeed to pronounce Englishfriction consonants that appeared in Javanese. Meanwhile, the capability torecognize English friction consonants decreased as it came to foreign sounds. The interviews showed that millennium era where theywere born could not help much their English pronunciation. English exposuresthrough technology and social media did not come along with English inpractice. In addition, teachers of EFL did not pay enough attention to theirstudents English pronunciation. Motivation also played a significant role tothe participants pronunciation. Participants with clear goal had betterpronunciation rather than the one without any exact goal. The goal determinedparticipants attitude towards English where achievement-oriented ones hadbetter pronunciation. This was as the result of higher language anxiety. All inall, theirsurrounding society was still the biggest factor influencing their languagevariation.
