Abstract :
Batombe art is one of the traditional arts (oral tradition art) found in the life of the Minangkabau people who use rhymes as the main element, precisely in Nagari Abai, Sangir Batang Hari District, South Solok Regency. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the function of the art of batombe in the traditional procession of the Abai community, South Solok Regency. The theory used in this research is Malinowski's theory of three levels which must be engineered in the form of culture, namely: 1). Culture must meet biological needs, such as the need for food and procreation. 2). Culture must meet instrumental needs, such as the need for law and education. 3). Culture must meet integrative needs, such as religion and the arts. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques through literature study, interviews, observation, and documentation. The stages of data processing are data collection, data reduction, data presentation, analysis and drawing conclusions. The results showed that; 1) Batombe Art fulfills Biological Needs, such as the community's need for procreation or relationships; 2) Batombe Arts fulfills Integrative Needs, such as the community's need for arts and entertainment; 3) Batombe art fulfills instrumental needs such as social and educational needs of the community.
