ABSTRACT
THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS? VOCABULARY AND
GRAMMAR MASTERY AND THEIR ACHIEVEMENT IN READING
COMPREHENSION AT THE SECOND GRADE OF SMAN 1

The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is significant correlation
between students? vocabulary and grammar mastery and their achievement in
reading comprehension. This research was quantitative research. The population
of the research was the students of the second grade of SMAN 1 Tumijajar. There
are ten classes of the second grade students. The sample was taken by using
simple random sampling and XI MIA3 was taken as the sample of the research.
The research design was ex post facto design; the researcher did not give
treatment but collecting the data by seeing the correlation between students?
vocabulary and grammar mastery and their achievement in reading
comprehension after analyzing by using SPSS 16.0. The aim of reading
comprehension, vocabulary mastery, and grammar mastery test were used as the
instruments to measure the level of students? comprehension, students? vocabulary
mastery, and students? grammar mastery in this research.
The correlation analysis showed three significant correlations. The first one there
was significant correlation between students? vocabulary mastery and their
achievement in reading comprehension. The second one there was significant
correlation between students? grammar mastery and their achievement in reading
comprehension. The last one student?s vocabulary and grammar mastery have
simultaneous correlation in their reading comprehension. Those results can be
seen from the analysis by using Pearson Product Moment, that the coefficient
correlation between students? vocabulary mastery and students? reading
comprehension was .839. Then, the coefficient correlation between students?
grammar mastery and students? reading comprehension was .726. Meanwhile, the
coefficient correlation between students? vocabulary and grammar mastery and
their achievement in reading comprehension was .870. The statistical analysis
correlation was significant (p>.01; p=0.00). Therefore, it can be conclude that
there is correlation between students? vocabulary and grammar mastery and their
achievement in reading comprehension. The higher vocabulary and grammar
mastery had gotten by the students, the higher reading comprehension had gotten
by the students.
