Abstract :
Instagram is not only used for photos, videos and various stories but can also be used as media for student learning in writing descriptive texts.The aim of this research is to determine the significant difference between students' English writing skills taught via Instagram and students' writing skills not taught via Instagram for class VII students at SMP N 1 SEWON.
This research was conducted at SMP N 1 Sewon. This research methodology is experimental research. The subjects of this research were class VII students of SMP N 1 Sewon. Data collection techniques in this study used a pre-test and post-test to determine student?s mastery of writing descriptive text skills. Researcher use Instagram media as a learning tool. The findings of this study were obtained by analyzing data with SPSS 26.
The results of this research show that (1) the student profiles before and after treatment are different, (2) there is effectiveness in using Instagram for learning writing because the average result of the student?s pre-test score is 39.86, and after treatment, the post-test score is 69.04 in the experimental class. Based on the increased score, the experimental class is better than the control class. The average result of the student?s pre-test score is 27.18, and the post-test score is 57.18. There are significant differences between classes that use Instagram and without using Instagram. The statistics presented in the Mann-Whitney table show that the test value is 0.001 < 0.05, indicating that Ha is acceptable. Furthermore, because it has a significant difference from the control group. H0 is rejected. Based on the statistical analysis, the Ha hypothesis is accepted.
