Abstract :
The study of pragmatics focuses on how language and context interact. One aspect of pragmatics that is examined is deixis. Research on Deixis needs to be done because if one cannot understand deixis, it is more likely that one is getting the meaning wrong in some context. Deixis can be found in literature, such as a movie, as well as in daily life. Movie is a familiar thing in society. Many people usually spend their time watching movies. Brave is an animated movie by Walt Disney in which many utterances of all characters contain deixis. This research aims to find out the types of deixis found in Brave movie script used by the main actor Merida and to describe the functions of deixis based on its types found in Brave movie script used by the main actor Merida. The researcher applied the descriptive qualitative method in this research. The data source of this research is Merida's utterances in Brave Movie. Instrument research that was used in this research is the classification table of deixis. The data of this analysis take only part of Merida's utterances in "Brave Movie" and then investigated according to the research questions: the types of deixis and the function of deixis. The results of this study show that there are five types of deixis, namely person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Each deixis analyzed has a function, including referential, emotive, conative, phatic, and poetic. The results of this study are expected to be able to provide an overview of the use of language in literary works concerning the context and situation of the user.
