Abstract :
Depression is a naturally feeling disorder followed with psychological and somatic components occurred as the results of long sadness (depression). The symptoms of this depression are commonly related to the problems of self- adaptation and acceptance towards loss (of something or someone) and stress. The correlation between stress and depression occurrence in the elderly involves society, family, and emotion supports which are available enough to help the elderly face their stress. This research aims at finding out the factors which are related with the depression occurrence in the elderly in Werdha Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home KM 7 Palembang. this research belongs to quantitative research with analytic survey design along with cross sectional approach. Purposive sampling (non-probability sampling) was implemented for sampling technique, with 28 samples meeting the inclusion criteria; the questionnaire used was adopted from Livibond and Lovabond?s (2011), Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS). From 28 respondents, it was found out that 15 respondents (53.6%) suffered from moderate stress. 22 respondents (78.6%) of 28 had moderate and good family support. There were 18 respondents (64.3%) who had mind depression. Chi Square test indicated that there were meaningful correlations between stress factors and depression occurrence in the elderly, with P value = 0,673. At the end of the research, it was suggested all health workers should concern on solving the problems of depression in the elderly.
