STUDENTS’ ABILITY AND DIFFICULTY IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL

Abstract :
The aims of this study is to investigate the student?s ability and difficulty in writing recount text. This study used qualitative research method. In this study, the writer involved tenth-grade students of Xaverius 4 Senior High School. The writer used total sampling technique to select the sample. Therefore, the total number of population and sample are the same, namely twenty. Writing tests and interviews were instruments used for collecting the data. To analyze the data, the writer used Miles and Huberman Model that consists of reducing, displaying, and concluding the data. The finding indicate that the student?s ability in writing recount text the participants obtained an overall score of 67.25 or categorized as good enough. The students? scores in writing aspects are various. In content, students gained score 67.75 which included in the good enough category. In organization, they got score 72.25 that can be classified into fairly good category. In grammar, vocabulary and mechanics, they had 75 and it was in good category. The results of the test implied that students? ability in writing text was still in moderate category as the average score was in range 60-70. And the result of the interview half of the sample mentioned that their writing ability was not good because they did not understand how to write a recount text well.
