Abstract :
This study is to describe the correlation between self esteem and self
actualization in Learning English at seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 7
Cerme .
The purpose of this study is expected to know the correlation between self
esteem and self actualization in learning English at seventh Grade SMP
Muhammadiyah 7 Cerme ,
The data collection instruments used for the study was questionnaire.. There
was twenty items for self esteem questionnaire and also twenty items for self
actualizations. After getting data from the school, the researcher analyzed the
data. The first step, the researcher gave score from each item the questionnaire for
the students .The second step the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS
16.00.
The result is the score between variable x (self esteem ) and y (self
actualization ) was 0,870 , because the result was positive, it showed that was any
correlation between two variables. The result in the table 4.2 showed that the
significant of p- value was 0,000 (<0,05) or in the word Ho can be rejected , it
means that there was correlation between self esteem and self actualization in
learning English.On the correlation (table) showed that the value of correlation is
0,870 and based on Riduwan (2003, 228) the correlation was very high.
Self-esteem and self actualization should be taken into consideration as a
serious issue when planning English lessons. The teachers at SMP
Muhammadiyah 7 Cerme should take into consideration the individual differences
among students and the different environments they come from.
The students who have low self-esteem and self actualization should be
trained to overcome their negative feelings about themselves and look positively
at their English learning capabilities. English teachers at SMP Muhammadiyah 7
Cerme should accept students' mistakes as a natural part of learning and
encourage trying and risk-taking in English learning.
On the basis of the results of the study, it is suggested that the students should
optimize many activities at their school which can develop learning English skill
such as, writing, reading, debate. Those activities can build self esteem and self
actualization in learning English. The student must have high motivation and
interested in English, and for the teacher held more extracurricular activities and
competitions such as debate , speaking, writing ,so the students are more
motivated in learning English.
