Abstract :
Motivation is essential part on language learning. It can determine the
success of learning. When the students are motivated to learn, they will show their
best effort in learning language. There are several ways to improve students?
motivation. The study in Banglore proved that task based teaching can enhance
students? language proficiency. Language proficiency can be achieved if the
students have high motivation to learn. It implies that Task Based Teaching can
enhance students? motivation on learning English.
The goal of this study is to know the effectiveness of communicative task
based teaching to enhance students? motivation on learning English at Eighth
Grade of Junior High School. It based on preliminary study in which the
researcher found a school where the teachers have been implemented task based
teaching since 18 years ago. There, the teachers gave communicative tasks which
invite the students to communicate in target language.
This study was descriptive qualitative research. The researcher described
and analyzed the existing phenomena during the implementation of
Communicative Task Based Teaching. The subjects of this study were the English
teachers and the students of eighth grade at SMPN 2 Manyar. The instrument of
this study was the researcher herself who use interview, observation form, and
open-ended questionnaire.
The finding showed that Communicative Task Based Teaching made
students become more active in speaking English. The observation proved that
students can position themselves as a monitor on their own learning. They can
evaluate their friends? performance and avoid the similar mistake so their
performance became better. The implementation of this method also made the
students more enthusiastic and active in learning because the teachers give a
communicative task and new learning experience to the students. The result of
questionnaire also showed that 83% students gave positive respond to
Communicative Task Based Teaching.
