Abstract :
The researcher intended to conduct an analysis of EFL outdoor activity at
SD Sekolah Alam Insan Mulia Surabaya (SAIMS). The statement of problem in
this study was how does the English teacher implement the outdoor activity in
EFL teaching at SD Sekolah Alam Insan Mulia Surabaya (SAIMS)? Thus the
purpose of the study was to explain the implementation of EFL teaching through
outdoor activity in the area of pre-outdoor activity, while-outdoor activity, and
post-outdoor activity at SD Sekolah Alam Insan Mulia Surabaya (SAIMS).
This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this
study was one English teacher who taught the first and second grade students at
SD Sekolah Alam Insan Mulia Surabaya (SAIMS). The researcher took four times
observation of the implementation EFL outdoor activity and twice interview
sessions with the English teacher. The instrument of this study was the researcher
herself by using tool of recording observation, field note, and interview form. The
researcher analyzed the data by using three steps, those are: data reduction, data
display, and conclusion drawing and verification.
The finding showed that there were kinds of activities that were done by
the English teacher in the implementation of EFL outdoor activity at SD SAIMS:
(1) The English teacher warmed-up the students and activated the students? prior
knowledge.; (2) The English teacher prepared the students before doing English
outdoor activity.; (3) The English teacher explained on detail about the activity
and/or challenge and the procedure of doing the outdoor activity.; (4) The English
teacher used the real objects as teaching media.; (5) The English developed the
students? skills.; (6) The English teacher guided the students on doing the outdoor
activity/challenge.; (7) The English teacher managed the time.; (8) The English
teacher checked the students? understanding.
The conclusion of this thesis is almost all about the activities that are done
by the English teacher on teaching English to the elementary students through
outdoor activity. The researcher also suggests for further researcher that she or he
should observe the implementation of EFL outdoor activity so that it could be
literature or alternative references for the EFL teachers who want to teach the EFL
students through outdoor activity.
