Abstract :
Speaking ability is to communicate and express their ideas, thoughts,
feelings, and needs in order to make sense of them. In the real condition, some
students are difficult to follow their speaking class. Based on this condition, the
teacher needed the right strategy which is expected to provide interesting activities
and encourage students to be active. There are many techniques in teaching
activity such as whole class teaching, pair work, group work and ringing the
changes. With using pair work, the students will be easier to learn English because
the techniques give an opportunity to the students to make their group by
themselves. Based on some preview studies, pair work technique can improving
or increasing the students? speaking skill. The researcher want to observed how
the implementation of the pair work as technique in teaching speaking that
focused on student?s assignment. Then, in this study the researcher focused on
junior high school students. It is because junior high school is the level where the
students should be able to string up the words and more often to practice of
speaking. So it can be obtained information or reference how the teachers
implement this technique in the classroom and face the problems that could be
arise on the implementation of this learning technique.
In this study the writer used descriptive qualitative. The subject of this
study is the teacher who implementing pair work as teaching speaking technique
in junior high school. The writer used observation and interview to collect the
data. The researcher conducted the observation in the class. In this condition the
writer is as a nonparticipant observer in the class. Then, the writer interviewed the
teacher.
After analyzing the data, it was found that the teacher implemented pair
work is appropriate with the theory from Harmer. There are two activities that
shows pair work activities that conducted by two teachers. The pair work
activities are practicing the dialogue with a partner and performing the dialogue
with a partner. The teachers divided the students into pairs consist of two students
following engage instruct initiate sequence. When the students practice with their
partner, the teacher monitoring them and sometimes the students were asked to
report to the teacher when they faced problem. Then, the students performed the
dialogue in pairs. Based on the findings, the writer found that the teacher
implemented pair work was appropriate with the material and the students
understand about the task that given by the teacher. In the process of implemented
the pair work, there are some problems that occur that faced by the teachers. From
all the problems that faced by the teacher, the teacher can solve it by guided the
students to follow their instructions.
