Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between
functional grammar mastery and common error on verb tense application of the
eleventh grade (IS3) Sma Negeri 1 Kebomas Gresik. The participants of this study
are twenty four students? of the eleventh grade (IS3) Sma Negeri 1 Kebonas
Gresik. Group Embedded Figures Test was administered to the participants as the
instrument to measure students? functional grammar mastery and common error
on verb tense. TOEFL structure was used to measure students? functional
grammar mastery and free writing was used to measure common error on verb
tense. Pearson Product Moment was applied in this study to determine the
significant relationship between two variables exist in this current study as the
variable of functional grammar mastery and common error on verb tense
calculated in form of ratio data. Both data have average for about 66,6 (x) and 75,3
(y).
The result showed that the researcher can see coefficient correlation both
of data ( r ) are 0,053 and conclude that the correlation between functional
grammar mastery and common error on verb tense application is very weak.
Moreover Coefficient correlation value is positive. It means if they have good
mastery in functional grammar, it is able to guarantee that they will not do
common error on verb tense application. As the matter of this research finding,
students who have good functional grammar mastery can engage their writing
skill by doing minimally error on verb tense. Somehow there are still many points
as parts of writing too need to be observed deeper.
