Abstract :
This study was conducted based on the consideration that there are many
debaters especially newbie who join debate in English debate community at
University of Muhammadiyah Gresik but there was no appropriate module or
book that fit with the needs of newbie debaters. There was a module about debate
that had been created by one of the debate member but the module was not
appropriate for beginner since the module contained the material for advance
debater. Based on the problem above, the researcher conducted the study that
focus on developing English debate module for beginner. The study focused on
finding the needs of newbie debaters like what they want to know and what they
should know and achieve in debate.
The design of the study is Research and Developmental study and it is in
line with the purpose of this study which is aimed to develop English debate
module for the beginner at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. In doing this
study, the researcher adopted the model of ADDIE model development with some
additional points based on the condition of this study. There were many steps that
have been done by the researcher. The steps were analyzing, designing,
developing, validating, implementing (trying out), evaluating, and creating final
product.
The result of need analysis revealed that all the participants need basic
information about debate like the information of system in debate, points of
debate, and the information about being an adjudicator in debate. It is supported
with the result of interview to debate coach that said that newbie debaters need
basic information about debate like the information of system in debate,
explanation of adjudicators and etc. In developing the module, the researcher used
the contextual based as the approach and less explanation more exercise as the
strategy. Contextual based and less explanation more exercise meant that the
module of English debate emphasized on the practice rather than theory because
debate is all about practice supported by the understanding of debate theory.
Finally, it can be concluded that the Basic English debate module for
beginner at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik appropriates with the needs of
debaters. It can be used as a guideline to learn debate for newbie debaters with or
without the debate coach.
