Abstract :
At this time, Indonesian people face MEA (asean economic society) that
challenge them to compete in the working world of international arena. These
reasons prove that mastering English is a necessity to become successful in the
working world. Teaching English in tertiary level apply into two objectives;
English for General Purposes (EGP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
ESP means teaching English to meet specific needs of the learners. The purpose
of teaching English in vocational high school is to prepare students' English
competence, so that it becomes provision for students to compete into the working
world. English materials taught to students in SMK Negeri 1 Sidayu is still
English for general purposes (EGP). Even though, teaching english at vocational
school should use English for specific purposes (ESP). Thus, a development for
teaching English material into English for specific purposes (ESP) is needed.
The objective of this study is to develop English material for automotive
department of vocational high school grade 10th at SMK N 1 Sidayu in order to
be integrated with their expertise and their vocational competence. The approach
used in developing this reading learning materials is content-based approach. This
reasearch focuses on developing ESP material for tenth grade students of SMKN
1 Sidayu in the first semester.
The design of this study is research and development (R & D). The steps
of the study are conducting needs analysis, writing the syllabus and the first draft
of the material, expert judgment, and writing the final draft of the material. In this
research, the researcher uses some instruments to collect data, namely interview
guidelines, need analysis questionnaire, and expert judgment questionnaires.
The results of the study indicate that (1)Their motivation in learning
English is to make the students easier to get a job that suitable with their expertise,
(2)The students? weaknesses in learning reading were the lack of grammar, (3)The
students need the reading material which is appropriate to their study program,
(4)The students need some supporting activities in the material to help them
improving their reading. There are three units in the reading material which was
developed. The topics are tools and parts of engine, instruction manual, and
mechanic?s work instruction. The appropriateness of the reading material is shown
by the value of mean 3.91. Which means that the reading material is appropriate
to the students? needs.
