Abstract :
This study was conducted based on problem the ninth grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik. There are many students have already been familiar with
reading text in learning English. However, they sometimes face some difficulties.
They understand the language feature in certain text types, but they still feel difficult
to apply their understanding of language feature in reading text. In fact, there are still
some problems that can be found from their result of reading achievement.
The purpose of the study was aimed to examine and explore grammar mastery
and reading comprehension. This project was determined to find out whether any
significant correlation between grammar mastery and reading comprehension or not.
The design of this study, the researcher used quantitative correlation research.
To collect the data of this study, the researcher used two tests. Both are grammar
mastery test (Past Tenses) and reading comprehension test (narrative text). The
formula used to analyze the data gathered from SPSS 16.0 Pearson Product Moment.
The result of this study, analyzed by Pearson product moment correlation, it
proves that the value of the correlation coefficient was 0,063. It means there is very
weak correlation between students? grammar mastery and students? reading
comprehension and the (r) value is positive, it is able to be concluded that the students
who master grammar well do not mean their reading comprehension is well too.
Finally, it is totally clear that grammar is not only one aspect which affects
student?s reading comprehension. The result showed that many students lack of
reading comprehension. Even grammar has been stated by many experts as the
foundation or basic English skill before mastering four skills. Based on the proof that
there are still a lot of aspects that students need to cover to enhance their performance
in reading comprehension, because just has a good grammar mastery is not enough. It
is recommended to use English in English classes, since it facilitates the students to
learn materials efficiently. By using English as medium of instruction, it helps
students increase their vocabulary knowledge.
