Abstract :
The goal of discussion method in teaching hortatory text at eleventh grade
in senior high school is not only to help them solve problem in discussion well but
also learn the way deliver something politely in front of people. Based on excerpts
from The Expert Educator (Jones, et al. , 1994), The Dictionary of Education
describes discussion as "an activity in which people talk together. In order to share
information about a topic or problem or to seek possible available evidence or a
solution. The researcher intended to conduct an analysis on the implementation of
discussion method in teaching hortatory text at eleventh grade of senior high
schools. The statements of problem in this study were how is the implementation
of discussion method in teaching hortatory text at eleventh grade of senior high
schools and how is the students response to discussion method in teaching
hortatory text at eleventh grade of senior high schools. Thus the purpose of the
study was to describe the teacher?s implementation of discussion method in
teaching hortatory text including how the way the teacher explain the problem will
be discussed, guide the discussion, and to know the students response to
discussion method.
This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of
this study were three EFL teachers who teach students of 11th grade at senior high
schools that selected through interview. Actually, the researcher took the data
three times in every teacher and the instrument of the study was the researcher
herself by using tool of observation, field note, and interview form. The researcher
analyzed the data by using three steps. Those are data reduction, data display, and
conclusion drawing.
The finding showed that the procedure of discussion method applied by
teachers and the students response by interview. The teachers usually applied the
discussion method for teaching hortatory text with teacher explain the problem
which will be discussed, teacher guide the discussion. The activities could be
applied to introduce hortatory text and discussion method well trough students
make groups, choose the moderator of discussion, students discuss with the group,
teachers go around the class to check the discussion, group report the result of
discussion by presentation, and teachers give feed back about discussion, and
group report the final result of discussion to the teacher.

The conclusion of this thesis is almost all of the discussion method applied
by teachers. The researcher also suggest for further researcher that she or he
should observe the implementation of discussion method in all skills of English
subject so that it could be literature or alternative references for EFL teachers to
make English as favorite lesson at Senior High School
