Abstract :
Language as a mean or identity to be member of a society. It also is used
to communicate among each other, to express many things and to deliver
meanings. Therefore language cannot be separated from the meaning. The study
of meaning of words, phrases, sentences is called semantic. One of the elements is
ambiguity. Ambiguity is words or sentences which has more than one meaning.
Since there are two kinds of ambiguities namely lexical ambiguity and structural
ambiguity.
The objective of this study is to describe ambiguity found in readers?
forum column in Hello English magazine. The subject of this study is Hello
English magazine published in January ? June 2007.
This study used descriptive design. The data were taken from the Hello
English Magazine in January ? June 2007. From the magazine, there were six
editions. Documentation technique was used as the instrument of the study. The
result of discussion shows that there were thirty ambiguous sentences which could
be divided into two types, nine lexical ambiguities and twenty one structural
ambiguities. According to the findings it was found that structural ambiguity was
higher than lexical ambiguity.
From the analysis, the researcher recapitulated ambiguity that was found
in readers' forum column of Hello English magazine. It was not as many as when
the researcher compared with ambiguous language dished in poem. Moreover, the
researcher stated that Hello English magazine has good reading materials in terms
of conveying learning English especially for youth.
