NATIONAL SCENE COLUMN IN THE JAKARTA POST ON

Abstract :
Basically, a paragraph is unified by mutually supported sentences. The word ?unity? is synonymous with ?onenesess?. All sentences in a paragraph should focus on the one thing expressed in the topic sentence; all of the sentence stick together. In addition to unity, coherence plays a crucial role in making a paragraph read well. Every coherent paragraph contains smoothly connected ideas. Each sentence moves on naturally. Unity and coherence can be found at newspaper, magazine, academic journal, or even your own professional will probably reveal most of those ?rules? being broken quite often. The Jakarta Post is a newspaper that uses English language as its language and differentiates it from others. The reason why the researcher chooses the Jakarta Post newspaper to be studied. First, it consists of hot issue happens in Indonesia. Second, hot issue related to the lesson of Senior High School students which do not focus only for authentic material and can avoid feeling of being bored. Third, the article in the Jakarta Post itself is short so it can be easily understood by the students. In this thesis, the researcher uses the discourse analysis which according to J.P. Gee (2005) stated in the end, discourse analysis is one way to engage in a very important human task. The researcher uses The Jakarta Post newspaper especially at National Scene Column edition 20th March to 2nd April 2012 as the source of the document. The instrument of this research is the researcher itself, so the researcher equipped herself with knowledge about unity and coherence. This study uses documentations of the Jakarta Post newspaper as the tool. The resercher uses some steps to analyze the data which are shown detail in data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion/verification. In this study, the researcher analyzes sixteen articles on 20 March to 26 March 2012 in the term of unity and coherence based on the indicators. In order to analyze the whole articles, the researcher collects the articles and primary data, which contain of indicators by using snowball method. The researcher found that there were 55 key words or phrases, 33 words of pronouns, two words of ordering principle and the last was 19 words of transition keywords or phrases. So the use of unity and coherence made the reader understand when they read.
