Abstract :
Background: The problem of smoking behavior in adolescents still shows a high number and one of the factors of smoking behavior is self-control. Low self-control can make adolescents unable to control and regulate themselves so that they can carry out negative behaviors that can harm themselves such as smoking behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-control and smoking behavior in adolescents. Method: This study used a cross sectional design. This study involved as many as 274 students of class X and XI SMA Malang selected using purposive sampling technique. The independent variable is self-control and the dependent variable is smoking behavior, both variables use the Self Control Scale (SCS) and Glover Nillson Smoking Behavior (GN-SBQ) questionnaire instruments. Data analysis using Spearman correlation test. Results: The results of statistical tests showed a p-value (0.000) with a correlation coefficient of -0.373. Thus self-control is significantly related to adolescents with a negative correlation direction with weak strength. The results of this study indicate that students of SMA Malang class X and XI have low self-control (57.7%), moderate smoking behavior (25.5%). Conclusion: There is a relationship between self-control and smoking behavior of students at SMA Malang. negative correlation means that the higher the self-control, the lower the effect on smoking behavior. The level of strength is weak, there are other factors that influence adolescent smoking behavior apart from the self-control factor.
