Abstract :
Body dissatisfaction is an attitude and a negative assessment of one's body. One thing that is thought to influence body dissatisfaction is social comparison, where a person tends to compare himself with others. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between social comparison and body dissatisfaction among adolescent Instagram users. This study uses a quantitative correlational design, with 160 subjects aged 18-22 years old who are active Instagram users with minimum use of 32 minutes a day and recruited using a purposive sampling technique. The scale used in this study were the Upward and Downward Physical Appearance Comparisons and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ)-34. The data were analyzed through the Spearman nonparametric correlation test and got the results in the form of a significant positive relationship between social comparison and body dissatisfaction among adolescent Instagram users (r=0.497; p<0.001). This means that the higher a person performs in social comparison, the higher the body dissatisfaction experienced.
