THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BRAINSTORMING STRATEGY TO IMPROVE

Abstract :
This research aimed at studying the implementation of brainstorming strategy to improve the seventh year students? of SMP Negeri 8 Malang ability in writing descriptive paragraph. Brainstorming is a technique used when teachers want students to work together, to generate ideas on a specific topic. Based on the theory the researcher wanted to find out whether or not brainstorming strategy can improve students? ability in writing descriptive paragraph. The researcher used quasiexperiment research design with non randomized pretest and post test. The writer used quasi experiment because the researcher had no power to randomize the class which had already been determined by the school. The population taken was the seventh year students of SMP Negeri 8 Malang. The writer took two classes, as control group and experimental group. Those classes were VII D (as experimental group) and VII E (as control group). The total sample of this study was 86 students. Based on the result of data analysis the student? ability in writing descriptive paragraph was slightly better than that of the control group. This was because after several treatments the mean score of the experimental group was 73.89, while the mean score of the control group was 69.63. Based on the result of ANOVA, it was found out that F ratio was 3.99. By considering the level of significance of 0.009, the degree of freedom (df) between groups 3 and the degree of freedom within groups 168, then the Ftable value was found to be 2.66. The data showed that the value of Fratio was greater than Ftable. Therefore, the hypothesis stated that there is a significant improvement on the students? ability in writing descriptive paragraph by using brainstorming strategy
