Abstract :
Background : In the past three decades, depression has been ranked as first mental disorder that can affect people of all age groups. Medical education is a stressful time. Medical students often face stressors during their studies. The undergraduate thesis is one of the academic stressors. Emotional quotient is an important parameter for managing emotions that affects all aspects of life. Low levels of emotional quotient seems to be correlated with some psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and stress. High emotional quotient is expected to provide good emotional control and adaptation skill to prevent psychiatric disorders.
Objective : To determine the correlation between emotional quotient and depression in students of Medical Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang that are working on thesis
Methods : Analytic observational research method with cross sectional approach. The population was students of Medical Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang that are working on thesis. This study uses convenience sampling method. Research Results and Discussion : The results of the Pearson correlation test gave an r result of -0.566 with a significance value of 0.000 which means there was a negative correlation between emotional quotient and depression.
Conclusion : There was a significant negative correlation between the level of emotional quotient and depression on students of Medical Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang that are working on thesis . The lower emotional quotient level, the higher depression, and vice versa, the higher emotional quotient, the lower depression.
