Abstract :
This research aims to determine students' abilities in writing descriptive texts
using vocabulary, mechanics and organization. The population of this research
was class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Seputih Mataram. The research sample
was class VIII taken using a purposive sampling technique, totaling 19 students
using the drawing method in the research carried out.
This study consists of problems, research objectives, methods, research
findings and conclusions. This study focuses on students' ability to write
descriptive texts. Descriptive text is a type of text that is not too difficult, but there
are still some difficulties faced by students when writing this essay, this is the
background for this study. In data collection, researchers used written tests as
instruments. The components analyzed were students' writing abilities based on
five categories, namely very good, good, sufficient, sufficient, and poor. This
study was conducted in class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Seputih Mataram.
The results shows that 15 students achive score good (60 ? 80), 3 students
achive score medium (40 ? 80) , and 1 student achive score very good (80 ?
100). The conclusion of the study on students' writing skills in descriptive texts
using picture media, there are some students who are good and some are
sufficient in writing. So the researcher suggests that teachers and students can
further improve students' writing skills in descriptive text and learn about
vocabulary, mechanics and organization.
