Abstract :
The present study aims to examine the use of personification in Mitski's
?The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We? song lyric album.
Personification is the attribution of human traits to inanimate objects,
abstract ideas or impersonal beings, which is often employed through
the use of action verbs typically associated with human behaviour.
The researcher analyzed the song lyrics using a qualitative approach.
The data were the song lyrics from Mitski's album "The Land Is
Inhospitable and So Are We". The data were collected through
tabulating. The data were then analyzed using Dodson's (2008)
framework of personification types: general, casual, and representative.
The findings have revealed that Mitski's song lyrics extensively utilize
personification. The analysis has identified 21 instances of general
personification and 21 instances of casual personification, each
accounting for 40% of the total occurrences. Representative
personification was used less frequently, appearing 15 times, or 20% of
the total. These results indicate that Mitski frequently imbues non-human
entities with human characteristics and actions in her songwriting.
