Abstract :
Dissimilar welding is widely applied in the railroad and shipping industries. One example of the application of dissimilar metal joints on trains can be seen in the car connection where carbon steel is used on the train car while the roof is stainless steel. However, in the process of joining different types it is not easy to do because they have different chemical compositions, different coefficients of thermal expansion and different melting points. This study aims to determine the effect of electric current strength on welded joints of different types of stainless steel and low carbon steel using GTAW welding on microstructure and bending tests. The results of this study can be used as a reference for work in the field in order to produce welded joints with good crack resistance. This study used an experimental method with different welding current strengths of 80 A and 100 A and carried out bending tests and microstructure observations. This process includes preparation of tools, trials, data collection, data analysis and drawing conclusions. The results of the bending test study showed that the highest bending strength value was in the specimen with a current strength of 100 A which had an average bending strength of 675.56 MPa. The microstructure observation shows that the pearlite element becomes more dominant by using a current strength of 100 A in three parts, namely: the weld area, the HAZ area and the base metal.
