Abstract :
Keywords: Politeness Strategies, Negative Politeness Strategies, Novel, The Time Traveler?s Wife This study is established to analyze the use of negative politeness strategies by main characters in The Time Traveler?s Wife Novel. The objectives of this research are to (1) identify the kinds of negative politeness strategies, and to (2) to reveal negative politeness strategy. This research applies descriptive qualitative. It concerns to describe the data in the form of utterances produced by main characters. The source of data is notes of the transcript in The Time Traveler?s Wife Novel. In conducting this research, the analysis of data uses negative politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson?s (1987). The data is categorized into the types of negative politeness strategies. And then, find out the most common are employed by the main characters. The result of the study shows that ten types negative politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the most common negative politeness strategies are employed by main characters in The Time Traveler?s Wife Novel . In the use of negative politeness strategies, the main characters in the novel uses Strategy 6 (apologize) for 7 times, strategy 2 (do not assumeor presume) for 7 times, strategy 3 (be pessimistic) for 4 times, strategy 7 (impersonalize speaker and hearer) for 3 times, strategy 10 (go on record as incurring debt or not as indebting the hearer) for 2 times, strategy 1 (be conventionally indirect) for 2 times, strategy 9 (nominalize) for 3 times, strategy 4 (minimize the imposition, Rx) for 4 times, strategy 5 (give diference) for 1 time. This study suggests for further research can engage the participants as many as possible and conduct the data in the other settings and themes in order to rich the data and also applying any recent theories for producing various findings in the pragmatic studies.
