Abstract :
This study aims to describe multifactor the language maintenance and language attitudes towards the Minangkabau regional language in bilingual migrant students from West Sumatra who are members of the regional community under the name of the Semarang Minang Student Association. The focus of this research includes studies of bilingualism, language choice, identity, place of residence, and community. The sub-focus of this research includes the study of language attitudes. This research is a mixed method, using a sociolinguistic theoretical approach, and using a practical approach to descriptive research methods. The population in this study, namely students who use the Minangkabau regional language who are members of the regional community. The sample that was successfully captured in this study amounted to 50 people. This study uses a survey method in collecting data. This study uses data collection techniques in the form of questionnaires, interviews, and documents. The data in this study is divided into two, namely quantitative and qualitative. The analytical method in this study is divided into two, namely by means of quantitative analysis and methods of qualitative analysis. This study uses descriptive statistical analysis techniques, implicational scale analysis techniques, and interactive analysis techniques. Quantitative data analysis in this study was assisted by the SPSS program. The results of this study indicate that migrant students from West Sumatra who are members of the Semarang Minang Student Association (IKAMMI) community have excellent language maintenance and have a very positive attitude towards the Minangkabau regional language. Very good language maintenance of the Minangkabau regional language can be seen in the transition of the mother tongue, first language recognition (mother tongue), the very good level of Minangkabau regional language skills, the very strong basis for using the Minangkabau regional language, the use of the dominant Minangkabau regional language in the family domain, an easily recognizable identity, residing with users of the Minangkabau regional language, and community activities that support the use of the Minangkabau regional language. This very positive attitude towards the Minangkabau regional language can be seen in the cumulative results of measurements of loyalty, pride, and awareness of norms.
