The Implementation of English Short Movies to Improve Vocabulary Mastery: The Case of Second Grade of SMP N 1 Kendal in the Academic Year 2022/2023

Abstract :
Vocabulary is really important in learning a language. This quantitative research study the implementation of English short movies to teach vocabulary for students. This research was focused on investigating the implementation of English short movies in improving students? English vocabulary mastery of eighth graders of SMP N 1 Kendal. The objectives of this research were to find out the result of students? vocabulary mastery before and after applying English short movie, to find out whether there was any significant difference of students? achievement in their vocabulary understanding who were taught before and after using English short movies, and to find out students? perception about the implementation of English short movies in teaching and learning process. an original motion picture that has a running time of less than one hour, including all credits. To achieve the aim of this research, it used a pre-experimental design. This research was conducted at second grade of SMP N 1 Kendal. The number of sample was 31 students. The data was gained from pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The instrument of this research are multiple-choice test and closed?questionnaire. Then the data was analyzed by using t-test formula in SPSS program to find out the significant difference on students? English vocabulary mastery before and after applying English short movies. The scores result of the data analysis of students? pre-test showed that the students still lack of vocabulary. It can be seen from the score percentage which only got 63.58% on pre-test. On the other hand, in post-test, the students? score increased after applying English short movies. The score percentage gained 74.96% which meant the score category was good. Based on the calculation by using formulas, the value of t-test was 7.480. Meanwhile, t-table value at level significance 5% was 2.04. According to the result, it can be concluded that t-test was higher than t-table (7.480>2.04). It showed that there is significant effect of the students? English vocabulary mastery after they received English short movies. The main factor affecting this improvement was the students? interest in teaching learning process using English short movies. In addition about students? perceptions towards the implementation of English short movies, most of them felt positive about the implementation of English short movies in learning process. Based on this data, the researcher concluded that implementation of English short movies could improve students? English vocabulary.
